Topsail Island Vacationers Giving Back: Friends Feeding Friends Friends Feeding Friends (F3) is a new charitable outreach on Topsail Island sponsored by The Emma Anderson Memorial Chapel in Topsail Beach, NC. The program was inspired by a very successful food assistance program, “A Second Helping,” in Holden Beach, NC. Since June 21st of this year, F3 volunteers have been collecting food on Saturday mornings in the Max’s Pizza/Cheri’s Steakhouse parking lot—right by the Surf City swing bridge—from 7:30 AM until 11:30 AM. What a convenient location for caring Topsail vacationers to quickly and easily drive through and drop off their left-over/unopened non-perishables on their way home! Rather than having to throw away or try to cart home their unwanted items, now Topsail guests can use them to help the hungry in the local area. Topsail Island Sea Turtles Return Home The New Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center is Now Open to the Public! What a sight to behold was the recent Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center’s “turtle release” in Surf City, NC! Monday, June 2, 2014, was a beautiful day to attend my first ever “turtle graduation,” as some Sea Turtle Hospital volunteers proudly dubbed the festivities. Additional releases took place Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of this week. Honestly, I’m not sure if it was the fact that I am pregnant myself, or if there was more to it than that, but I became quite emotional as I approached the staging area and saw nearly a dozen turtles cradled in the arms of caring volunteers. Each one I approached proudly showed off the turtle (whether small or large) in their care.

Taking the Plunge: Surf City’s Twelfth Annual Dolphin Dip 2014

By Amy Baker January 3, 2014 Would you take a winter time dip with dolphins on Topsail Island in January?! Well that is exactly what a few hundred people did on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 in Surf City, NC! According to WECT News, there were more than 2500 people in attendance for the 12th annual Dolphin Dip Extravaganza this week. Many of them donned creative costumes, including everything from Elmo, to the Three Stooges (who were the costume contest trophy winners this year), to pirates (including the Captain of The Raven, a pirate ship known to frequently attack The Belle of Topsail)! The crowd also enjoyed the talents of several performers musicians, dancers, and even an aerialist! Gunfire signaled the beginning of what looked like a race, as shivering participants (young and old alike) dove into the wintry waves. Unfortunately, for some people, the holidays are not the happy time that most of us are accustomed to enjoying each year. Many people in our community and the surrounding areas (Jacksonville, Holly Ridge, Topsail Island, and Surf City) are in great need right now, and without our help, this season can be very difficult and depressing for them. All year round at Mama J’s we provide food, clothing, household items, diaper wipes and formula for free to those in need. We have a soup kitchen on Mondays where we provide hot meals for those who might not get them (or much of anything to eat) otherwise.  On average, we feed about 800 -1,000 people every month.
